Online Freedom of Speech: 09-f9-11-02-9d-74-e3-5b-d8-41-56-c5-63-56-88-c0

Yesterday marked a very interesting day for online free speech on the internet.

The hexadecimal series “09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0″, was released yesterday that can be used to unlock the AACS encryption used on HD DVDs. Yes, that’s right — 32 digits can be used to bring down a complex encryption schema. Well once people started getting word of this key, they decided to start posting links to this code on the Web 2.0 site Digg.com, and that’s when the fun began. Digg.com recieved a cease-and-desist order to remove posts citing the encryption key, which they adhered to temporarily until the Digg community revolted by posting thousands of comments about the situation. Kevin Rose, founder of Digg, quickly reversed his policy and allowed full access to any and all posts with the number.

Virtual Keyboards – Old idea coming of age?

I just finished reading (SmartComputing) a quick blurb about a Virtual Keyboard that uses lasers and infrared to produce a fully functional ‘virtual’ keyboard. The picture was awesome and I thought it was revolutionary… but upon doing a little research, it appears that virtual keyboards like this date back to 2002 – possibly earlier.

Time Magazine listed a non-production virtual keyboard from Canesta as one of their best inventions of 2002. Interestingly enough, it appears that Canesta abandoned the idea and decided to focus on electronic image processing.

Vigilantism

Blue Security, the geniuses that made news a while back advertising their intent to create a network to DoS spammers, are back in the news again.

The reason is hardly surprising. Blue Security themselves were the result of a massive DoS attack. How did they respond? According to this NANOG post, by switching their DNS to their Typepad-hosted blog. So, rather than deal with the consequences of their abuse of the Internet, they made it someone else’s problem — namely Six Apart’s: you may have noticed that both Typepad and Livejournal were down yesterday as a result of the DoS.
