Travis's Biography

Travis Black is a master of custom development and scripting languages such as PHP, Ruby on Rails, and Symfony. He's a PHP advocate and a lover of all things custom dev, and is frequently seen doing a victory lap through our upstairs office when he fights his way through tricky functionality or complex code.

We rely on Travis' his dedication to finding the right solution to our most complex challenges. In fact, his dedication to finding solutions can be compared to "scaling a mountain" -- something we've seen him do in real life. Yes, "Flyweight" (as he was known at the time) once ran up the side of a mountain at a rural Tennessee truck stop on a dare from Nicholas Holland. We didn't think it was possible, but Travis scaled that mountain within his 10 minute time limit and won $100. That's the kind of dude you're dealing with here.

Ruby on Rails Meetup

Last night CentreSource hosted the The Nashville Ruby on Rails / Agile Software Meetup Group for the first time. Presenter Alex Sharp shared a presentation on Test Driven Development (TDD) with Shoulda, a set of helpers that sit on top of the Test::Unit framework. You can see a blog post he made on the subject at his blog.

The group was a good mix of Rails veterans, casual users, and even people who have never used rails. Josh Crews headed the group up and started out with everyone introducing themselves and getting to know each other. Afterwards we had open discussion on topics ranging from Rails skeleton apps like Bort and Suspenders, to ORM implementations in Ruby, to Gems and Plugins like AuthLogic.

Centre{source}’ers present at Nashville PHP User Group

Centre{source} ers Brent Shaffer and Travis Black led a presentation on Symfony at the Nashville PHP User Group’s April meet-up. The presentation was part of a four part series on PHP Frameworks, including presentations on Code Igniter, CakePHP, and Zend Frameworks. The presentation covered a brief overview of Symfony’s features and history, followed by a step by step tutorial on building a blog application in Symfony. Big thanks to Will Fitch for putting this event together and for inviting us to speak, and to all of the Nashville PHP community in attendance.
