Greetings all,
Each Sunday nite I’ll be posting a Flash Site of the Week. I’m hoping to receive feedback on what folks like or don’t like about them. Just to get a feel for what people like to look at in a flash element.
I’ll try to give some “Points of Interest” to help you get to the cool stuff quicker, but sometimes there’s just cool stuff everywhere…this being one of those cases.
This is a portfolio site for osmanDinc, an interactive media designer. All I can say about the following site is there’s interactivity everywhere - just move your mouse around to find it if you think you’re “stuck”.
Enjoy,
star.

The web continues to impress me when I stumble across things that are relatively simple, yet done in such an elegant manner I can’t help but notice. This was the case when I discovered the Javascript overlay techniques of Lightbox, Greybox, and Thickbox.

Lightbox
Lightbox provides functionality to overlay images (with effects) onto your website - without using Flash or other plugins. It is perfect for creating a beautiful image gallery, while still maintaining easy control over your images! Don’t take my word for it, see for yourself: Lightbox JS v2.0

Note: In the same session, I also found a ‘Lite’ version for anyone that wants the same functionality, but with less code (and presumably resources). It is called Litebox 1.0

Litebox is a modified version of Lightbox v2.0 created with one thing in mind, size reduction. Litebox utilizes the 3kb javascript library moo.fx in association with prototype.lite, giving us the basic tools we need to make this work and you the ability to expand.

Greybox
Greybox provides functionality to overlay HTML pages on your website - it describes itself as a “A pop-up window that doesn’t suck”. Greybox is very useful for providing visitors with additional information, a ‘focus area’ to input data, etc. Here is a demo page that shows the functionality of Greybox. Again, the smooth screen effects that are NOT using flash. SEO and Maintenance are still preserved (Flash experts, don’t flame me).

Thickbox
Last but not least, we have Thickbox. Thickbox combines both Lightbox and Greybox functionality, and still remains light weight - less than 50KB! It was actually the creator’s blog that introduced me to all three examples (Thank you Cody Lindley). You can view the demo to see the Thickbox in action - and notice that it can display overlays for the following extensions: .jpg .jpeg .png .gif .html .htm .cfm .php .asp .aspx .jsp .jst .rb .txt. It also supports AJAX/AXAH calls!
*Note: Inexperienced Javascript users may still consider Lightbox over Thickbox since it has some nice effects that Thickbox does not (example: Previous/Next tabs & hot keys)

Greetings all,
Star here. I thought I’d dedicate my first entry to the single greatest flash site I’ve found. It’s a massive site that could take years to fully explore, but I encourage you to visit it. It’s got it all: nice sound, cool effects, beautiful photographs, plentiful information, & tons more. I’m sure you will enjoy your experience. This is what I aspire towards in every aspect. It’s my “Holy Grail”, so to speak…my unicorn. Let me know what you think.
Select your language, & after the (skippable) intro click on “enter” next to the “Forest Gallery - world photographs”, & let your amazement soar.
http://www.forests-forever.com/
enjoy!

Are the seemingly never-ending Instant-Messaging wars finally coming to a close?

Jabber/XMPP has gotten another big shot in the arm this week, with the announcement that Livejournal has launched a Jabber server for its users, complete with the friends-list pre-loaded as the Jabber roster. They will be incorporating s2s communication, along with lots of other features.

This comes on the heels of Google Talk, which last year launched its XMPP-based Google Talk service, opened it to XMPP s2s on the Internet. They also incorporated an (optional) user-friendly AJAX-based IM client into the gmail web client — look for Livejournal to do the same, as well as integrating the blogging/comment-notification functions into instant messaging as well.

With two big players like Livejournal and Google backing the open XMPP standard, things are looking more grim than ever for proprietary, closed, and centralized instant messaging services like AOL, Yahoo, et al. Here’s hoping the trend continues!
