VMWare has thrown open the gates to its new Server product, as rumored last week. Their press release has more details:

VMware Server, the successor to VMware GSX Server, enables users to quickly provision new server capacity by partitioning a physical server into multiple virtual machines, bringing the powerful benefits of virtualization to every server.

Offering VMware Server for free will bring VMware's proven virtualization technology to a wider audience, allowing companies to achieve the benefits of virtualization, such as cost reductions and flexible server provisioning.

This new version is still technically in beta. It will be interesting to see if the capabilities are crippled in any way that the previous non-free versions of GSX server weren't. We'll be trying it out here. Stay tuned for details!
