adfree opera

OperaWatch is speculating that news hinted at by Opera might involve removing the ads from their free browser.

Personally I haven’t seen any ads in Opera since I bought a license 6 years ago — the best $30 or so bucks I ever spent — it got me through the Dark Years of the browser wars, and it was worth it for that alone.

I definitely agree.. and I think Opera is a good enough browser (although the progression of its quality has faltered a little bit with 8.0, in my opinion) that it can regain that ground if they ditched the ads.

Of course, I have no idea what they'll do for revenue without them

Hopefully they make the full version free. There isn't much point in paying for a browser now that you can get IE, Firefox, Safari, Epiphany, etc all without having to pay specifically for the browser. Statistically, Opera use has been steadily declining from a whopping 5.4% of the browsers used throughout the Internet in Jan 2002 to a mere 1.1% today. (http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp) Of course you can pull your statistics from wherever you'd like and I'm betting they will differ greatly from one source to another, but the trend is there. Opera needs to do something to get the foot back in that door.
