google IM -- jabber/XMPP?

We've all heard the rumors about Google's new product (*cough*IM*cough*). The natural question was whether or not they would embrace the open standard, XMPP/Jabber.

Check this out.

I thought it could be fake, but talk.google.com is definitely real, and definitely listening on port 5222, and speaking XMPP:

$ telnet talk.google.com 5222
Trying 64.233.167.125...
Connected to talk.google.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
<stream:stream xmlns:stream='http://etherx.jabber.org/streams' xmlns='jabber:client' xml:lang='en-US' to='talk.google.com'>
<stream:stream from="gmail.com" id="E455DB3E" xmlns:stream="http://etherx.jabber.org/streams" xmlns="jabber:client">

UPDATE: Okay, I am way behind. Here's the CNN article.

UPDATE 2: Looks like it's up and working. I just logged in using gaim and authenticating with cmwage@talk.google.com as my JID. However it looks like to add another google/gmail user you have to use their username@gmail.com. This is an odd inconsistency between the JIDs that show up.. I wonder if they will fix this, or what. Doesn't look like s2s functionality is working, though. I tried to add cwage@jabber.centresource.com and I never got the request.

    As of about 8:00 tonight, http://www.google.com/talk officially launched. There's a separate client, as well as instructions on connecting through GAIM, Trillian, iCHAT, and more.
