“Netscape” 8.0

This is rather silly. AOL continues to release its “Netscape” browser, which is nothing but FireFox re-packaged, except on a staggered release, since they have to track the FireFox changes before releasing. They are touting this as a revival of the Netscape brand — as a “security” minded browser.

Today, a day after “Netscape” 8.0 was released, they released 8.01 to fix a whopping 44 security holes in the (old) 1.03 version of the source code they had used to build Netscape.

By deploying repackaged old code, AOL is doing a disservice to its users. It’s not a “security” minded browser if it’s consistently behind the main branch of development of Firefox. It appears that the Firefox developers agree.
